Oiwa, in the Japanese tradition, was a woman who was disfigured in the face, with the poison, by her husband. Legend has it that the woman, who died in his folly, and being a spirit tormented resurfaced in various forms, traditionally that of a paper lantern, to kill her husband and having so 'revenge. The silver ring in our collection represents San Oiwa in its traditional guise of a ghost lantern.
